As of November 18, 2008, Jan Walter has joined the Western Polymer sales and customer service team as Starch Coating Manager. Jan brings to Western Polymer her years of experience in servicing the Pulp and Paper industry in both the U.S. and overseas.
Western Polymer CEO and Co-Owner Lynn Townsend-White said, "Jan brings to Western Polymer a diverse background that will complement our sales and service team's competencies in servicing our customers."
Hiring Jan is part of Western Polymer's continued dedication to serve the pulp and paper industry and ensure our technical team is ready to meet our customers' needs. Jan will be working primarily with Western Polymer's new Wescote™ product line.
Ms. Walter joins Western Polymer from Western Michigan University where she was General Manager of Pilot Plants. She is a TAPPI Fellow and is the TAPPI PaperCon '09 steering committee chair.

| Western Polymer is announcing a general 10% to 15% price increase for its cationic wet-end and specialty starches. This increase applies to Western Polymer’s cationic wet-end starches brand named Wescat® and Wespoly™ and specialty Wescote™ brand starches.
Western Polymer has endeavored to hold pricing constant for most starch products for the past ten months. However, during this period, costs for energy, labor, raw starch and chemicals have risen steadily and at times dramatically and continue to rise. Western Polymer is no longer able to hold prices down and requires a general price increase on wet-end and specialty starches in order to maintain operating margins.
Price increases are effective July 1st or as contracts allow. |

This brings all of Western Polymer's facilities under ISO 9001:2000 certification. "Obtaining ISO 9001:2000 certification for our Grand Forks facility is part of our ongoing commitment to quality assurance for our customers, "said Chief Technical Officer and Co-Owner Sheldon Townsend. "This allows customers to know that the quality Western Polymer is known for does not matter which plant their product comes from."

Western Polymer has endeavored to hold pricing constant for most starch products for the past six years and has modernized its plant and equipment to lower costs and make its operation more efficient. However, during this period, costs for energy, labor, raw starch and chemicals have risen steadily and at times dramatically and continue to rise. Western Polymer is no longer able to hold prices down and requires a general price increase on wet-end starches in order to maintain operating margins.
Price increases are effective September 1st or as contracts allow.

The molecular weight of the potato amylose molecule is five times greater than that of corn.
A higher Molecular weight provides better bonding and lower retrogradation rates.
Enhanced bonding strength is the primary benefit of using potato starch over cornstarch.
In many applications, potato starch is the better choice!
