WESCOTE®
Highly derivatized starch for use as a coating/size press additive.

WESCOTE® is a coating/size press additive.
WESCOTE® is a highly derivatized starch.
WESCOTE® has the water-holding characteristics of CMC.

WESCOTE® forms a very flexible film.
WESCOTE® has the strength of synthetic binders.

WESCOTE® produces paper that prints with little dot gain and high blister resistance.
WESCOTE® starches are custom made for each customer's application. Our sales and service personnel work closely with mills to match the mill's viscosity requirements.
WESCOTE® starches are available in a wide variety of viscosity ranges.

Successful applications of WESCOTE® starches include:

  • Opaque papers – Replacing more expensive binders at equal or improved paper machine runnability and printability while reducing costs.
  • Coating formulations - Replacing CMC to reduce costs.
  •  Coated two side - Produced a C2S solvent holdout sheet that did not blister.
  •  Paper plates – giving grease resistance.
  •  Fine papers – As an additive to size press starches to improve ink-jet printing, reduce linting and milking and increase surface strength.
  •  Pet food bags – replacing fluoro chemicals
  • LWC roto – replacement of latex

TRIAL RESULTS:

 WESCOTE® as a CMC & HES Replacement in #2 & #3 LWC Grades

Trial Objective:
Replace CMC and ethylated corn starch in current coating formulas with a cost savings

Trial:
Coating formula was changed from:
1. replaced 70% of the CMC with Wescote® on a 1 part CMC to 0.8 part of Wescote® basis
2. replaced the HES with Wescote® on a 1 part HES to 0.4 parts of Wescote® basis
3. Reduced crosslinking resin by 70%

Trial Results:
Mill trial was a success. The paper was commercially printed and tested. The print tests showed a 30% improvement in print quality. Mill savings were calculated at $500,000/year.

The molecular weight of the potato amylose molecule is five times greater than that of corn.

A higher Molecular weight provides better bonding and lower retrogradation rates.

Enhanced bonding strength is the primary benefit of using potato starch over cornstarch.

In many applications, potato starch is the better choice!
